Crime Problems

People have two choices with this issue as well-to earn a living according to the law, or to earn money through stealing on other criminal activities.

Crime rate is high in a community with fewer opportunities for legitimate sources of income. Notice that a country's crime rate escalates or descalates accordingly with the state of the economy.

The poorer the country, the higher the crime rate. Many individuals to earn a living are those who are denied access to legal job opportunities due to economic and educational reasons. On the other hand, people who are not necessarily poor are tempted to go into criminal activities (such as selling illegal drugs or engaging in illegal gambling) because of the large profits.

Note that in the above case, the employers are the produces of the goods, which is labor, and the capital lists and business owners are the consumer of these goods. Why do many capitalists and business owners practice contractualization? first, this practice decreases their cost because no regular benefits are provided to the contractuals. Second, because the employees contract is subject to renewal on a regular basis (hence, no jobs security) employers seldom practice their right to organization and free expression. A rising out of their grievance is impossible because of fear that their contract may not be removed.

Business owners and capitalists will continue hiring contractuals because of its perceived benefits to their business.

Traffic Problems
Why are there traffic jams? People can choose between taking public transportation such as jeepneys, buses, taxis, LRT, and MRT, or using private vehicles. The are two affect this decision: direct cost and opportunity cost. The direct cost is thefare for public tranportation and gas for private vehicles. On the other hand, opportunity cost cannot be measured using monetary value. For example, direct cosy in taking public transportation may be cheaper but can give someone too much hassle since it is hard to tell when he or she can get a ride, what time he or she will arrive at his or her destination, or when it is safe for him or her to travel. Because of these factors most people would prefer to use private vehicles despite higher direct cost.

But it everyone were to use private vehicles, traffic would become a problem. Heavy traffic in cities such as Makati is not only caused by traffic vidations but also by the volume of vehicles on the road and the bathered state of the roads.

Employment Problems
The government has once approved and encouraged the practice of contractualization to invite new entrepreneurs as well as foreign investors.
Contractualization is a practice of emplyment where the capital or business owners hire workers on a labor only Contractual basis five thier contract is subject to renewal on a regular basis.

Application of the Concept of Consumer Bahavior

1.) How do you relate consumer bahavior to society?
2.) What are examples of social issues?

If you were ask an economist about his or her observation on consumer behavior , he or she might answer consumer behavior shows that consumers think before they act.
If consumers benefit change, then the consumers decisions might change as well. This involves the process of choosing which option gives the highest utility or satisfaction in relation to the cost they bear.
The concepts of consumer behavior can be related to social problems such as traffic, pollution and crime. Through economics, these problems can be handled or solved by logical means.
Often, examining social problems and suggesting solutions depend on understanding consumer behavior. Where did these problems come from? How do you solve these problem using what you have learned in economics?
